The Gwangju Democratization Movement Commemoration Committee collected eyewitness testimonies from South Korea’s Gwangju Uprising during the 1980s. A translation of those testimonies has been published by Verso Books as Gwangju Uprising: The Rebellion for Democracy in South Korea by Hwang Sok-yong, Lee Jae-eui, and Jeon Yong-ho, translated by Slin Jung.
In May 1980, pro-democracy protesters mobilized in the South Korean city of Gwangju. The US-backed military dictatorship responded with bloody repression, but the legacy of the Gwangju Uprising was vital for the democratization of Korean politics.
