Daniel Wortel-London is a researcher and educator based in New Jersey whose work focuses on the history and strategy of radical economic development. His book The Menace of Prosperity: Private Growth, Public Costs, and the Struggle for Economic Development in New York City, 1876–1976 is under contract with the University of Chicago Press.
Establishing worker-owned firms is no substitute for building a strong labor movement and a socialist presence within the state. But worker co-ops can play a key part in a broader socialist strategy, by making tangible the material benefits of cooperation.
