In The Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote that “the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie.” Donald Trump isn’t trying too hard to prove them wrong. Despite running his third presidential campaign as a populist, Trump has staffed his administration with the richest of the rich: his appointees’ combined net worth is over $400 billion, a figure that exceeds the annual GDPs of 169 countries. Much of that money belongs to Elon Musk. But Trump’s cabinet appointees alone, with a net worth of as much as $20 billion, still shatter the record for wealthiest administration ever, which was previously set by Trump himself in his first term.
