Rural Voter Blues
Contrary to what you’ve heard, progressives actually can reach rural voters.
It’s hardly a secret that progressives have a dismal track record in rural America.
Of the 97 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, only New Mexico’s Teresa Leger Fernandez represents a primarily rural district. No sitting representatives from districts like hers were endorsed by Bernie Sanders in 2022.
Zooming out to the Democratic Party as a whole, the pattern is consistent: the overwhelming majority of 2022 general election Democratic congressional candidates who ran in rural districts lost their races, and the same is true of candidates in mixed rural-suburban districts.
