Issue 62: Dossier
A little bit of judicial review never hurt anyone.
- Checks and balances
A principle of government ensuring that the executive, legislative, and judicial branches can exert preventative action over one another, precluding any one branch of government from wielding undue power over the others.
- Due process
The constitutional guarantee that no person should be deprived of life, liberty, or property by the government without appropriate legal procedures. The original due process clause is part of the Fifth Amendment, later extended to apply to state governments by the Fourteenth.
- Enumerated powers
The specific, listed powers that the Constitution grants to the federal government. One example of an enumerated power is the federal government’s exclusive right to coin money for the United States.
