Having gone without a collective bargaining agreement since 2017, workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, took to the picket line with the support of several other local unions to protest years’ worth of mistreatment — including stalled contract negotiations, 16 years without a raise, and, most recently, the termination of their health insurance, as Block Communications refused to pay an additional $19 per employee per week to maintain their coverage.

September 13–October 31

Mill workers in Longview, Washington, have been out on strike against one of the largest lumber companies in the country since mid-September. Despite record financial performance in 2021, the company proposed a contract that slashed vacation time, required workers to pay a health care premium, failed to improve retirement benefits, and offered only modest wage increases. Workers returned to the mills on Halloween with a new contract that includes wage increases and payout for unused sick time but also requires a worker contribution to health insurance premiums.
