Ballot Blocks
Every year, it gets harder to vote. We have our elected officials to thank for that.
Over the course of the 2022 legislative session, legislators in at least 27 states have introduced at least 151 election interference bills. These laws, 12 of which have passed so far this year, directly enable partisan interference in elections or else seek to intimidate the nonpartisan officiants of electoral processes. A further seven states have passed ten bills that make it harder for eligible Americans to register to vote, stay on voter rolls, and cast their ballots. Only seven states and ten bills, you say? Seems a little low for the United States. But it’s not for lack of trying. In the 2022 legislative session alone, 39 states considered a whopping 405 bills that would encroach on voting rights. Only one year in the last decade has seen more such legislation pass: 2021.
