Jobs You Should Salt
Under capitalism, the only thing worse than being exploited is not being exploited. Socialists throughout time and space have tried to place themselves strategically to build the power necessary to win a fairer world. Three things to consider before you clock in: Will you make enough to live a stable life? Would a strike here halt the local economy and freak out politicians? How cool is the uniform?
- UPS or Amazon worker
Amateurs talk strategy; professionals talk logistics. Billions of dollars move through these workers’ hands each day, and almost none of it can be outsourced. By organizing at Amazon and linking up with local Teamsters, you could shut down the whole supply chain, the argument goes. That gets politicians’ attention fast.
- Teacher
Teachers’ strikes don’t just stop schools. They stop cities. When teachers walk out, bus drivers, support staff, and parents get pulled into the fight. You’ll also get to teach students what actually caused the Civil War, which is its own reward.
