Antinomianism

The view that true believers need not follow sacred or secular laws. A debate over antinomianism swept the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s, when Anne Hutchinson criticized leading Puritans’ emphasis on salvation through good works.

Apophatic theology

A tradition based on the idea that we can only describe what God is not, since his perfection lies beyond our comprehension. Apophatic theology was a key influence on St Augustine and the medieval rabbi Maimonides.

Apostate

Someone who has abandoned their religion. Some modern states, such as Afghanistan, still have laws criminalizing apostasy.
