The Left Under Macron
Newly-elected Communist MP Elsa Faucillon on France's divided Left and the way forward in the fight against Macron.
Today’s second round of the French legislative elections delivered a decisive majority for Emmanuel Macron, the country’s newly-elected president, and his party En Marche!
While the results were disappointing for the French radical left, especially after the advances made by the Mélenchon campaign, the result will likely treble its representation in parliament – from 10 to 30 MPs.
One of those elected is Elsa Faucillon of the French Communist Party, who topped the poll in Gennevilliers, a suburb in Paris’ northwest. In the final days of the campaign she spoke to Jacobin contributor Maxime Benatouil about the challenges these elections have posed and the prospects for Left realignment in their wake.
