When Hanna Batatu published The Old Social Classes and the Revolutionary Movements of Iraq in 1978, it was hailed as a masterpiece, one of the most empirically rich works about any Arab country. Batatu published this first work of his at age 52 — and it secured his status as one of the greatest historians of the 20th century.
