New York’s Socialists Were Largely Victorious in Last Night’s Elections

In yesterday’s New York state primaries, the New York City Democratic Socialists of America didn’t win every race. But socialists notched two important victories, both defending and expanding their electoral wins in the state of New York.

Yesterday, the state of New York held primary elections for its state senate and congressional seats. For socialists, the news was mostly good.

The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialist of America (NYC-DSA) easily swatted away two challenges to incumbent state senator Jabari Brisport. More surprising, after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Queens Democratic power player Representative Joseph Crowley in 2018, NYC-DSA and other progressive groups like Working Families Party (WFP) and New York Communities for Change (NYCC) again powered a newcomer, Kristen Gonzalez, to victory over a Crowley, Joseph’s cousin Elizabeth, in the Democratic primary for the newly created State Senate District 59.

Brisport and Gonzalez were both running as candidates on the “For the Many” slate, a group of thirteen candidates for the state legislature backed by NYC-DSA. (Most members of the slate were also backed by an array of other progressive organizations). Incumbent state senator Julia Salazar, also running on the slate, did not face a primary challenge this year. (Neither did AOC, NYC-DSA’s sole endorsed representative in Congress.)
